Introduction to the Equestrian Community

Picture
Movies such as Black Beauty, National Velvet, and Seabiscuit all illustrate the close bond that a horse and human can share.  These movies show the touching and emotional side of having a horse in a person’s life.  Yet, these movies sometimes forget that in many of these situations the horse was in that person’s life due to business.  For example, Seabiscuit centers on how the title character improves  the mentality of millions of Americans during the Great Depression.  However, they forget to include that the owner of this horse was running him to make a profit.  The equine industry is large across the United States, there are many different types of riding, and there are many different types of owners that own these animals. Many people claim they got involved in the equine industry due to having a passion for horses, but it is important to examine the true identity of the group.  The identity of the equine industry is that it is a business community.  This identity is based on the business atmosphere within the equestrian community and the business atmosphere that connects to the equestrian community.

How People Become Invovled

Many people first get involved in the equestrian industry due to the love and passion they have for horses.  After some time of being involved in the industry they may decide to open their own barn or invest in a racehorse.  Becoming a horse farm owner also occurred to Lauren Nethery, who is a horse trainer in Lexington and also owns several racehorses.  She explained how she became involved in the business of the equestrian industry.  She said, “It is really a passion turned into a profession.  I love horses and pretty much everything about them, and now I can make money working with them.”  Before further explaining the business atmosphere of the equestrian community it is important to first define what exactly a horse farm is.
